For over two decades early intervention has been family-centered. The family is part of a transdisciplinary team in which the family unit is considered the primary focus. A salient question we ask is, "What is the research evidence for family-centered practice?" The following articles address the efficacy of family-centered practice in early intervention. In the United States, family-centered helpgiving practices refer to the approach used in working with the families that "honors and respects their values and choices and which includes the provision of supports necessary to strengthen family functioning" (p. 370). Although family-centered practices have been used for many years to provide services to young children and their families, particularly children with special health care needs and disabilities, some professionals have questioned whether evidence supports the use of family-centered practices. Thus, the authors of this article, from Orleans Hawks Puckett Institute in North Carolina, conducted a 47-study meta-analysis with the purpose of analyzing data regarding the relationship between family-centered helpgiving practices and parent, family, and child behavior and functioning.
